Nau mai, haere mai ki te rōpū Taiao o Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa!

The Taiao Unit is responsible for facilitating kaitiakitanga and giving effect to the provisions in the Ngati Awa Environmental Plan in the Ngati Awa Area of Interest, on behalf of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa as the iwi authority and post-settlement governance entity.

 

Members of the Taiao team assess consents, provide feedback on draft and proposed statutory plans, strategies, and documents; facilitate engagement and the TRONA executive on environmental projects and matters; and works with the Pou Kokiri Mike Panapa who facilitates engagement with hapu and for the provision of karakia alongside relevant hapu representatives and kaumatua.

NGĀTI AWA ENVIRONMENT PLAN

The purpose of this Plan is to articulate our:

• common vision for kaitiakitanga of our natural resources and ancestral taonga.

• issues regarding resource and environmental management within our rohe.

• position regarding activities and development within our rohe (i.e. what we want or do not want to happen).

• expectations with regards to consultation by others, particularly Council, Central Government Agencies, developers and resource consent applicants.

Consents

Bev Hughes (BSocSc Resource & Environmental Planning 1st Class – Waikato University) is contracted till 19 December 2025 to draft TRONA Responses and Assessments of applications for:

  • Resource Consent

  • Heritage NZ Authority

  • Department of Conservation Concessions or Permits

Costs:

TRONA charges $250 an hour + $150 admin fee + $1.17c per km for site visit + GST.

Please note that consent activities proposed in the area west of Otamarakau to Maketu will be referred to Te Tawera Hapu for assessment. Ms Hughes will provide their contact details upon receipt of those enquiries.

  • Written confirmation TRONA Invoice will be paid

Planning

Bev is also contracted to draft input, feedback, and submissions on national, regional, district, environmental and resource management plans, strategies, spatial plans, asset management plans, and similar statutory planning instruments on behalf of TRONA.

Costs:

Please note TRONA seeks to recover costs for its early contributions to statutory planning at the same rate as consents. These costs are associated with TRONA’s early written input or feedback on statutory plans or documents.

TRONA does not charge the planning entity for the submissions TRONA makes.

The Administration fee of $150 may also be charged along with the appropriate mileage rate of the time for travel to meetings + GST.

Environmental Projects

Pretty Ross is the Environmental Lead at TRONA responsible for facilitating engagement and feedback on environmental projects proposed in the Ngāti Awa rohe.

Ms Ross is also responsible for changes and development of Ngāti Awa environmental planning and strategies and is the Environmental Team lead at Te Runanga o Ngati Awa.

Hapu Engagement and Karakia - Blessings

Mike Panapa, Pou Kokiri at TRONA is responsible for:

  • facilitating engagement with hapu representatives.  

  • arranging for karakia/blessings

  • giving effect to the Ngati Awa Discovery Protocol by arranging kaumatua attendance in the event of discovery of koiwi tangata (human remains), taonga tuturu (artefacts, and waahi tapu and waahi taonga (sacred sites and sites of significance) in the Ngati awa rohe.
